Where did the Sisadmin day come from and why it is important to celebrate it

Traditionally, Sisadmin Day is celebrated on the last Friday of July. This tradition is popular all over the world, and in recent years has been gaining momentum in Russia. A little story. The “father” of this holiday is an American system administrator with 20 years of experience Ted Kekatos, who saw the Jewlett-Packard magazine advertisement, in which grateful users have established new printers of the system administrator with flowers and fruit baskets. Kekatos, who recently installed several printers of the same model, decided to create a special day dedicated to the profession of a system administrator. The first such day arranged by Kekatos came on Friday July 28, 2000. It was just a picnic in nature on the outskirts of Chicago, in which members of a small software company took part. Since then, the holiday is usually celebrated on the last Friday of July.

2006 began to be celebrated by the World Information Society Day (since 2007, World Electric Life Day and Information Society), which has been assigned for May 17. Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly, this memorable day has an official status, and, apparently, can replace the day of the system administrator.

For example, since 2006, the All -Russian System Administrators have been held near Kaluga, every year collecting more and more participants. So, if about 350 people visited the first rally, then in 2009 more than 4,000 people from 174 cities of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan came to it. Also a collection of system administrators in Novosibirsk, which takes place on the shore of the Ob Sea.

Every year more and more people take part in this holiday, and we believe that this is very cool! After all, the modest workers of the “invisible front” should have their own day and their holiday, so that they remember how important and valuable their work. In the end, it is the successful and stable activities of companies that directly depends on them.

This year the holiday fell on Friday July 29. Since our program is directly related to the work of system administrators, we decided that we should celebrate this day together, and for such a case we took a whole hall in one of the Moscow pubs. We invite all the cool systems of Moscow (and other cities, too, if we get), spend the last Friday of July with us. The event will be held in an informal dialogue format. All guests will be treated with excellent dinner with burgers, steaks and, of course, with an abundance of beer and pleasant communication with colleagues in the workshop.
